What to expect at Haapsalu Episcopal Castle
Haapsalu was the seat of the Osel-Wiek bishops from 1265 until the Reformation, and their castle is one of the largest and best-preserved medieval episcopal complexes on the Baltic coast. The main body encloses a cathedral (still active), a bishop's palace, and a bailey with 800 metres of curtain wall. It sits on a shallow peninsula facing warm-water bays where 19th-century Russian aristocrats came to take the mud cure — Tchaikovsky spent summers here and wrote his 6th Symphony largely on the seaside promenade.
The White Lady legend claims a young girl was walled up alive in the cathedral after being caught with a canon, and every August her silhouette allegedly appears in the interior window during a full moon. Whether or not you believe, the town throws a whole White Lady Days festival around the phenomenon in early August — one of the best small-town festivals in Estonia. Haapsalu is a 90-minute drive or bus from Tallinn; make it an overnight and pair with the wooden train station museum.
