What to expect at Rakvere Castle
Rakvere Castle sits on Vallimagi hill above a country town, and the Livonian Order built it in the 14th century on the ruins of a Danish and Estonian fortress. Unlike most Baltic castles, Rakvere has been turned into a full living-history experience — you can try on chainmail, fire a crossbow, watch blacksmith demonstrations, and descend into a genuinely creepy "chamber of death" recreation. It's designed for families and school groups, so it can feel touristy, but for kids it's the best castle day in Estonia.
Come as a day trip from Tallinn — buses take 90 minutes from Balti jaam and cost about $8 return. The castle is best in June to August when all the workshops run and the reenactors are in costume; outside peak season, most of the interactive bits are closed and it's just ruins. Combine with a walk around Vallimagi park and a photograph beside Tarvas, the four-metre bronze aurochs statue at the base of the hill (free).
