Day 1: Old Town on foot

Start at Viru Gate on Viru street and climb toward Town Hall Square (Raekoja plats). Duck into St. Catherine's Passage on Vene, then work up to Toompea for the two big viewing platforms — Kohtuotsa (the one on every postcard) and Patkuli, quieter and looking north to the port. Coffee at RØST on Kanuti costs about $4.50. Lunch at Rataskaevu 16 needs a reservation; mains run $18-24. Afternoon: Kiek in de Kök and the bastion tunnels, $14 combined ticket.

For dinner, walk down to Rae 4 or Von Krahli Aed on Rataskaevu for seasonal Estonian plates around $22. Sleep close in — Hotel Telegraaf on Vene has doubles from about $170, or Old House Guesthouse on Uus from $95. Both put you inside the wall so morning photos happen before the tour buses at 10.

Day 2: Telliskivi, Kalamaja, seafront

Walk 15 minutes northwest through the Balti Jaam train station and into Telliskivi Creative City. Breakfast at F-hoone (mains $9-12) then wander the murals and pop into Fotografiska ($16). Balti Jaam Market next door is the best cheap lunch in town: hot smoked fish plates for $7, dumplings at Pelmeen for $6.

Afternoon: stroll the wooden houses of Kalamaja to Patarei prison ruins and Lennusadam Seaplane Harbour ($20), which has a real submarine you can climb inside. Sunset drink at Põhjala Tap Room on Peene 5 in Noblessner, then dinner at MEKK or 180° by Matthias Diether if you saved up — tasting menus $140-200.

Where to base yourself for two nights

Old Town if it's your first visit and you want to walk everywhere — expect $150-220 for a decent double. Kalamaja / Telliskivi if you want cafés and character over medieval; Hektor Design Hotels does doubles from about $110 and it's a 12-minute walk to Town Hall Square. Avoid the strip near the ferry terminal unless you’re catching a boat to Helsinki — it's convenient but charmless.

Frequently asked questions

What people ask before they set off on this one.

Is 48 hours enough for Tallinn?

For the Old Town and Telliskivi, yes. You’ll miss Kadriorg park and any day trip, but you can see the historic core comfortably.

Should I buy the Tallinn Card?

Only if you’ll hit 3+ museums in a day. The 24-hour card is $37; skipping it and paying per site is usually cheaper for a 2-day visit.

Can I do Tallinn without a car?

Absolutely. The Old Town is pedestrian, and trams plus a 20-minute walk cover everything else. Don’t rent a car for city days.

How much should I budget for 48 hours?

Around $250-350 per person including a mid-range hotel, two sit-down dinners, museums and drinks. Under $180 if you stay in a guesthouse and eat at Balti Jaam Market.
