Getting there
Drive time from Tallinn is about 70 minutes on the Narva highway (E20). Car rental starts at $45 a day from Sixt or Green Motion at the airport. No car? Traveller Tours, Estonian Experience and Reisiproff all run daily small-group day trips $70-95 including entries. Public bus goes to Palmse but you’ll only see one manor — not worth it.
What to actually see
Four stops make the day: Viru raba bog with its 3.5 km boardwalk loop (allow 90 minutes, free), Palmse Manor with the restored 18th-century Baltic-German estate ($12), Altja fishing village on the coast for lunch, and Käsmu, the sea-captains' village on a peninsula of glacial boulders. Skip Sagadi if you’re tight on time — Palmse covers the same era better. Altja Kõrts serves Baltic herring, potatoes and dark beer for about $18 per person.
