Walking the Old Town
The three great viewing platforms on Toompea are all free: Kohtuotsa (the classic view over red roofs), Patkuli (looking north to the port) and Piiskopi (west toward Kalamaja). St. Catherine's Passage, Master's Courtyard, and the alleyways around Rataskaevu are all free to wander. Town Hall Square is free, obviously, and the changing of the guard outside Toompea Castle happens weekdays at 12:00.
Parks, beaches and neighbourhoods
Kadriorg park is a full afternoon: Peter the Great's summer palace grounds, the Swan Pond, the Japanese garden. Free. Pirita beach — 3 km of sand, sea and pine forest, 15 minutes by tram. Kalamaja and Telliskivi are essentially open-air museums of wooden architecture and street art. Walking the sea wall from the old harbour to Noblessner takes 40 minutes and is free.
Museums with free days or free access
Estonian History Museum is free every last Friday of the month. KUMU is free on the third Sunday. Kiek in de Kök offers free entry on 18 May (International Museum Day) and Independence Day. The Occupation Museum has pay-what-you-want. The Museum of Photography's ground-floor exhibitions are free. Churches — St. Nicholas, Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, Holy Spirit — all free to enter, though photography inside sometimes costs $2.
