Why people stay in Viimsi
Viimsi is where Tallinn's professional class moved out to in the 2000s. It's a 15 km peninsula pointing north into the Baltic, with a mix of new detached housing, a genuine village center at Haabneeme, and pine-forest coast around the tip. The Estonian Open Air Museum is technically on the Rocca al Mare side but Viimsi has its own Rannarahva Museum (Coastal Folk Museum) and a war museum. Ferries to Naissaar and Aegna islands leave from Kelnase and Leppneeme. At 9pm it's suburban quiet with sea views.
Recommended for families with cars, a summer stay of a week or more, or as a base for island trips. Skip if you don’t have a car — bus 174 from Old Town works but is infrequent and the peninsula's attractions are spread out. Skip also for a short first visit; you’ll waste time commuting. Where Viimsi shines: kids' beach days, a spa hotel, quiet nights, and easy day trips to the islands.
The Viimsi Tervis Spa and Hotel Viimsi dominate at $90-$160 a night with pools and spa. Boutique guesthouses in Haabneeme and Pringi run $75-$130. Airbnb villas near the coast go up to $200+ for family houses. Best areas: Haabneeme (village amenities), Pringi (waterfront), Rohuneeme (peninsula tip). Avoid the newer developments off Randvere tee if you want walkable dining — those are pure residential.

Getting around Viimsi
Bus 174 from Viru bus terminal runs to Viimsi in 25-40 minutes depending on stop, $2. Bus 1A also reaches Haabneeme. From the airport, Bolt is $18-$25. There is no train. The peninsula is 15 km long — with a car you’ll drive between attractions in 10-minute hops; without one, plan two attractions per day by bus. Ferries to Naissaar/Aegna leave from Leppneeme (Viimsi's north end).
